The Tarka Trail is North Devon’s prime traffic-free walking and cycling route, stretching over 180 miles in a figure-of-eight loop through some of the most scenic and diverse landscapes the county has to offer. As one of the longest continuous traffic-free walking and cycling paths in the UK, it offers a supreme way to explore the spectacular countryside, river valleys, woodlands, moorlands, and coastline of North Devon.

The trail follows the journey of Tarka the Otter, the beloved character from Henry Williamson’s timeless novel. As you make your way along the trail, you’ll pass several landscapes and landmarks featured in the story — including the peaceful River Torridge, amazing moorland, and hidden estuaries. Part of the Tarka Trail forms National Cycle Network Route 3, also known as the Devon Coast to Coast Route, which runs from Ilfracombe on the north coast all the way to Plymouth.

Smytham Holiday Park is distinctively located directly on the Tarka Trail, offering its own private access point for guests. Whether you’re planning a long-distance adventure or just a few peaceful miles, Smytham is the perfect base for walking and cycling holidays in North Devon. We welcome walkers, cyclists, and families, with a wide range of accommodation including camping pitches, lodges, and glamping pods.

Along the trail, you’ll find bike hire centres. There is one here on the park at Smytham, Great Torrington and Fremington, making it easy to get started even if you don’t bring your own gear. The Tarka Trail also hosts seasonal events such as charity bike rides, walking festivals, and nature-themed activities, which are perfect for families and outdoor enthusiasts.

Whether you're a seasoned cyclist, a casual walker, or a nature lover, the Tarka Trail near Smytham Holiday Park offers an excellent way to experience the very best of Devon’s natural beauty.

Accessibility: The Trail is accessible for wheelchairs, mobility scooters and pushchairs. It is accessible from the park, however there is a boardwalk and bridge over the stream and a climb up through a wooded area. Can be accessed on the flat if driven to Watergate, which takes 6 minutes in a car (2.1miles).
