We have beautiful weather in the summer in England but we can still have those rainy days which has definitely been the case this week! After the heatwave of the summer you may also be looking for a day out where you don’t need to worry about the sunburn or can shelter in some shade. Below is a list of indoor venues the whole family can enjoy.

Air Extreme

Suitable for children from 18 months (take a look at the timetable on the website). The Trampoline park offers, full size Olympic style trampolines, a sea of wall to wall interconnected trampolines, a super soft, landing air bag, and dual tumble tracks. Dartington Crystal Factory Tour

Located just down the road in Great Torrington is the largest British Crystal factory and you can take a tour. Entry for the tour is free to under 16s. As the factory is a working factory, the tour is only open Monday – Friday. In the Visitors’ center you can learn about the history of Dartington Crystal, take part in creative activities (different charges apply) and visit the glass shop. On site is The Pavilion Café serving freshly prepared food, coffees and cream teas. In the factory tour you can see skilled glass makers at work and view every stage of the glass making process. Dartmoor Prison Museum

Holding 640 men, HMP Dartmoor Prison is a working prison. Public entry to the main prison is prohibited but Dartmoor Prison Museum displays the history of keeping prisoners on Dartmoor all the way back to the war of 1812 with America and then back to 1805 and the war between Great Britain and France. See keys, weapons and artwork made by prisoners over time and visit the museum shop which sells items made by the current prisoners.

Great Torrington Museum

Open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, Great Torrington Museum is free to visit and run by volunteers. The museum exhibits display the diversity of the ancient market town. From the Rolle Canal, glove making to pottery and the civil war, the history is fascinating.

National Marine Aquarium

Located in the city of Plymouth, it is the largest aquarium in the UK. A part of the Ocean Conservation Trust, the aquarium works to connect people to the ocean. Made up of four areas, you will see many exhibits and animals. Starting your journey through the aquarium in Plymouth Sound you will travel across the globe to the Great Barrier Reef.  See fish, octopus, turtles, sharks and stingrays.

The Box- Plymouth

Admission to the museum, gallery and archive at The Box, Plymouth is free. Located in two buildings, visits could be as short as an hour or take all day. With a café on site, lunch is sorted. With exhibits on world cultures, photography, moving images, natural history, art, archives and local study and Cottonian collection, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Great Torrington Swimming Pool

Make Waves Swim School and Soft Play

With swimming, soft play and wild play on offer there is lots for little ones. The Wild play area is complete with sand pits and painting and contains a racetrack for competitive fun. Free to enter, the Burton Art Gallery is located in Bideford on the edge of Victoria Park. In the past at the Burton Art Gallery you have been able to view works by Michael Morpurgo, Picasso and David Hockney.

National Trust

We are lucky to be in easy reach of several National Trust properties such as Castle Drogo, Knightshayes, Arlington Court, Waters meet and serveral others. Whilst these do have outdoor areas to explore, these properties can also be explored indoors.
