SEN Friendly Holidays in Devon: Why Smytham Holiday Park is Perfect for Autistic Children and Families with ADHD

Planning a holiday when someone in your family has additional needs takes more thought than most. The wrong environment, unpredictable crowds, unfamiliar surroundings, or sensory overload can turn what should be a break into something that feels harder than everyday life. At Smytham Holiday Park in North Devon, families tell us that something is just… different here. In this post, we want to explain why.

A Quiet Countryside Setting That Works for Neurodiverse Families

For families seeking SEN friendly holidays, the environment itself matters as much as the activities on offer. Smytham is a small, family-run holiday park set in 33 acres of peaceful North Devon countryside, tucked into its own valley on the grounds of the 940-year-old Smytham Manor. There are no theme park crowds, no loud music systems, and no wall-to-wall strangers. Just open green space, woodland, birdsong, and fresh country air.

That calm, contained environment is one of the reasons Smytham works so well as an autism friendly holiday destination. Many autistic children and adults find large, busy holiday parks overwhelming, too much noise, too many unknowns, too little space to decompress. Smytham is the opposite: where the pace is gentle, and where families find it easy to establish a predictable daily rhythm.

For families navigating ADHD friendly holidays, the wide-open spaces and outdoor focus are a genuine asset. There is room to run, explore, and burn energy productively and that makes a real difference.

Accommodation That Gives Families Their Own Space

One of the most important things for many neurodiverse families is having a private, self-contained base. Smytham offers several excellent options:

Holiday Lodges

Our two Scandinavian-style log cabin lodges, Lavender and Heather, sleep up to six people and come with their own private gated decking, hot tub, and off-road parking. They are fully self-catering, so there's no need to navigate busy restaurant environments or worry about menus. The open-plan layout means families can be together in one comfortable space, and the selection of board games included means there's always something to do on quieter evenings.

Heather Lodge is pet-friendly (up to 2 dogs), which is a significant bonus for families where a pet provides important comfort and routine. Lavender is pet-free. Both lodges include a travel cot and high chair if needed, and unlimited free WiFi is available throughout.

Having a private hot tub and enclosed decking area means children have a safe, bounded outdoor space, something many SEN families tell us is genuinely invaluable.

Glamping Pods

Our cosy glamping pods are built from sustainably sourced UK timber and are fully insulated with double-glazed windows and doors, warm in winter, cool in summer. Each pod has its own private deck with a BBQ, table and chairs, and picnic bench. Inside, you'll find electric lighting, heating, a fridge, kettle, and TV.

For families who love the idea of camping but find the unpredictability of tents stressful, particularly children who struggle with changes to their sleep environment, a pod offers the best of both worlds: the outdoors feels with a warm, reliable, secure space to sleep in. We have Family Pods sleeping up to four, a Dog Friendly Pod, and an Escape Pod for two.

Holiday Caravans for Sale

Some families find that having their own holiday home, one that stays exactly as they left it, with all their familiar things in place, transforms what holidays look like for a neurodiverse child or young person. Owning a static caravan at Smytham means you can visit as often as you like throughout the season, building familiarity with the park, the routines, and the surroundings over time. For autistic children in particular, the ability to return to a known, consistent environment can make holidays genuinely restorative rather than anxiety-inducing.

On-Site Facilities That Help, Not Overwhelm

  • Smytham has a thoughtful range of facilities that work well for neurodiverse families without being loud or chaoti
  • Outdoor heated swimming pools (open May–September) at a small, quiet park these are a world away from the packed leisure centres and resort pools that can be overwhelming for sensory-sensitive children. A calmer more relaxed swim session with reduced noise is also availible throughout the season - check with the park for the current timetable.
  • Indoor soft play for under 5s a contained, safe environment for younger children to explore.
  • Nature and fairy trail a gentle, self-led activity around the park grounds. No queues, no noise, no crowds. Children can go at their own pace.
  • Family-friendly fishing one of the most calming, absorbing activities there is. The repetitive, focused nature of fishing can be particularly well-suited to children with ADHD or autism.
  • Mini golf again, a low-pressure activity with clear rules and a defined objective.
  • Games room a quieter indoor alternative when outdoor activities feel like too much.
  • Cycle hire Smytham has direct access onto the Tarka Trail, the famous 180-mile foot and cycle path running through the heart of Devon. Cycling offers that perfect combination of physical activity, fresh air, and the kind of forward motion that many children with ADHD find deeply settling.
  • 33 acres of grounds with wide open lawns and woodland to explore, there is always space to move away from other guests and find a quiet corner.

Predictability and Routine: What Smytham Does Well

For autistic children especially, predictability matters enormously. Because Smytham is a small, family-run park rather than a large resort, the experience is consistent and personal. The team knows regular guests by name. The layout is simple enough to learn quickly. There are no large events or entertainment programmes that suddenly change the atmosphere of the park.

You can also use the park map to walk your child through exactly what to expect before you arrive, where your pitch or accommodation is, where the toilets are, where the pool is. For children who benefit from advance preparation, this kind of visual walkthrough can make all the difference to arrival day.

The Local Are & Choosing Activities That Work

North Devon has plenty to do, and some of it suits neurodiverse families particularly well:

  • The Tarka Trail  as mentioned above, cycling or walking this traffic-free route is a brilliant option. It's predictable, low-stimulation, and the physical rhythm of cycling is genuinely beneficial for many children with ADHD and autism.
  • RHS Garden Rosemoor  wide open outdoor space, natural sensory experiences (textures, scents, colours), and none of the high-stimulation chaos of a theme park. A great option for a gentler day out.
  • The Big Sheep  for children who are ready for a more active day out, this Devon attraction offers a range of farm and activity experiences in a contained, manageable setting.
  • The wider outdoors North Devon's beaches (Westward Ho! is just 20 minutes away), woodland walks, and open countryside offer the kind of unstructured natural play that research consistently shows benefits children with ADHD and autism.

Practical Considerations

Dogs are welcome at the Heather Lodge and Dog Friendly Pod, pets as part of the family, not a logistical problem
Free WiFi across the park, for children who need access to familiar apps or media as part of their routine, reliable WiFi is not a luxury
Small, quiet park, no large events, no entertainment schedule, no surprises
A Note to Families

We want to be straightforward

Smytham isn't a specialist SEN facility, and we don't make claims we can't back up. What we can say honestly is that we are a small, calm, peaceful park with a family-run ethos, private self-contained accommodation, wide open outdoor space, and a team that genuinely cares about every guest having a good time. We hear regularly from families with autistic children, children with ADHD, and children with other additional needs that Smytham feels like a place where their family can actually relax.

If you'd like to talk through whether Smytham would work well for your family before booking, please do get in touch, we're always happy to have that conversation.
