9 Top Tips for Camping

Our 9 Top Tips for Camping at Smytham Holiday Park

Plan your days out

It’s always important to know what sort of activity’s are around the campsite you’re staying at. But be sure to not over plan or over stuff your holiday with activity’s as sticking to a schedule can become stressful and take the enjoyment away from a once in a lifetime experience. To check out what is near Smytham Holiday Park see the local area page on our website.

Stay positive

This can be hard as things may not be as expected. The biggest challenge you may face when you are camping can be the weather. Therefore, it is important to go with the flow and stay enthusiastic. At Smytham our large pitches allow you to bring larger tents or extras such as gazebos to use on these wetter days to make the most of this quality time spent with those important to you.

Observe campsite rules

This is important, following the campsite rules allows you to respect the campsite, staff and other campers. There is always a reason that these rules have been set, even if that reason isn’t so obvious. Observe the quiet hours this will help keep your neighbours happy and everyone loves happy campers!

Layer up

Bringing more layers than you need is a must whether you camp in the hotter summer months or the colder months of the year it is essential to pack more layers than you think you’ll need; it can be much colder than expected. Always bring thermal layers rather than just thick cosy clothing. Looking at the weather of the location of the campsite can help with knowing what type of layers and how many you will need on your holiday.

Don’t forget a torch

A torch is a vital to have when camping, whether you use a traditional torch or the one on your phone, it will be something that is used a lot on your camping trip. To pop to the loo at night or for something that has been misplaced. It is important to remember it can get dark earlier at the beginning or the end of the camping season. It is always a good idea to bring a backup just in case, you don't want to be looking for batteries in the dark. Therefore, make sure you have multiple options for lighting, many modern camp lights have bug repellent. If you forget the campsite shop should sell these.

Bringing Kids?

Bring snacks

Snacks are just as important as meals; you’ll be using more energy when camping physically from all the fun activities you will be completing and from keeping warm on those colder nights. Snacks are also important because if you are out on a day trip you could have a late lunch or get back to the campsite later in the evenings so don’t expect to be eating your meals at the times you normally do at home. Happy kids mean happy parents.

Something for the kids to do when they wake up

While you want a nice relaxing lay in on your holiday your kids will be up and ready to play before the sun rise, bring them something quiet to occupy them like a tablet, games or books until you decide it’s a reasonable hour to get up. At Smytham we have games and books to borrow from our tourist information centre.

Explore the boundaries of the site and your own rules

An important thing to do when camping is to set boundaries for your kids as your boundaries at home may not entirely apply on the campsite. Make sure to set boundaries for your kids that keep them safe whilst also letting them explore their curiosity (while following the park rules). This can also be a learning experience to expand their knowledge of the environment and how to protect it while still enjoying it.

Make a checklist

Making a checklist can be vital especially if you’re camping with young children, finding out you’ve left something at home is never fun so make a checklist before you begin packing to make sure you own everything you wish to bring. If you use something a lot replace it when necessary if something is never used take it off the checklist. It is important to make sure you have the essentials on the list but a must is to add entertainment to the list for example cards or board games. You can also involve the kids within this process, by doing this you can ensure their enjoyment not only whilst on camping trip but in the lead up by building their excitement.

So if you are new to camping or just need a refresh, whether you bring the kids or are camping on your own. Make the most of your camping holiday and book now!
